The recent discovery of a leather-bound notebook could be the solution to a debate that has been rampant within the Royal Society for 350 years. The argument revolves around English politician Alexander Popham - who was born deaf and mute around 1650 and was taught to speak by a distinguished scientist. But who?

Controversy has since centred around which of the two scientists Popham’s mother hired - William Holder and John Wallace - was the actual man who succeeded in teaching the boy to speak.

Born in Littlecote House in Berkshire, Popham could not hear or speak until his desperate mother hired eminent scientists Holder and Wallace. Ann Popham was determined that she would be able to communicate with her son. Popham was the only male heir in the family, so it was crucial that he received as much help as possible in living a comparatively normal life.

A record of who actually achieved the astonishing results was never kept and has been subject of argument ever since.

Alexander Popham was the grandson of infamous John Popham, the Chief Lord Justice of England between 1592 and 1607. Judge Popham is notorious for being the man who sentenced Mary Queen of Scots and Guy Fawkes to death during his tenure.

However, it’s his grandson that’s been the source of speculation for so long. The discovery, which was found in the butler’s cupboard by accident, details that it was undoubtedly John Wallis who taught Popham how to speak.

Wallis used modern techniques to aid education, beginning by teaching Popham how to make sounds before moving further towards language constructions. Wallis drew diagrams which he used to show Alexander how to position his tongue and lips in order to form sounds. He then employed the same method to grow the sounds into full words.

Alexander went on to live a relatively normal life - even marrying a woman named Brilliana and fathering four healthy children with her. He became a politician who is best known not for his cured disabilities but for his patronage of the renowned Enlightenment philosopher, John Locke.

The discovery has been an excitement to the scientific community, many of whom now feel they can put this age-old debate to rest. Alexander’s descendents were invited to Littlecote House to visit the notebook for themselves and see the evidence firsthand that displays who really taught their famous relative how to speak.

Littlecote House has existed in several restored and renovated forms since the 13th century. It is now a country house hotel and resort, one of many popular hotels in Berkshire.

Life can be hectic and it’s easy to focus on our own problems, without pausing to think of those around us. Indeed, who has time to worry about others, when we all have our own issues to deal with?

However, there are times when personal issues can spill over, and alone, they can make one feel isolated, scared and powerless to cope. Terminal illness is a common example, whereby without the right support, people just could not survive on their own.

Fundamentally, humans are not designed to be alone; they naturally form groups, often living together as families, working as part of organisations and coming together for social occasions. In this way, societies have formed over centuries to shape the everyday life we now, for the most, partake in.

The word society derives its meaning from the Greek word ‘socus locus’, which implicitly means that members of a society share mutual interests or concerns, as well as common goals and characteristics. Due to the increasing fragmentation of today’s society, however, this meaning is often lost. It is a fact that we are leading busier lives, with longer working hours and less time to stop and consider what is happening around us.

Regardless of these reasons, it must not be forgotten that it’s crucial for people to help each other. This is particularly pertinent for those suffering from, or who are affected by, long-term illness.

Take cancer, for example. There are increasing numbers of people affected by some form of cancer, and without the right knowledge, treatment, support and funds, the effects can be overwhelming and devastating.

Volunteering is a great way to help, and as well as improving people’s understanding, it helps ensure more money is raised for medical research and life-saving treatment and care. There are many ways to help out in society, and by working together, lives can be improved.

Fundraising is one of the most vital tasks volunteers carry out. Either joining an existing group, or setting up your own one can help raise finance for those who need it. And, with creativity being a key element, you can have real fun whilst you make money, such as hiking across the Great Wall of China in a swimming costume, or attempting to hold the world’s biggest coffee morning!

Alternatively, you could become an ambassador for a charity, whereby you support other volunteers, organise public collections or hold talks and presentations, with the aim of raising people’s awareness of the issues and what they can do to help.

Students, or those looking to change their careers, can also become involved by choosing to take up a work placement or internship with a cancer charity. You could also improve your C.V. or enhance practical skills by, for example, assisting a charity in its public relations or event management department.

Whether you are retired and have lots of extra time, or can literally spare two hours every three months, cancer volunteering can help save lives and provides the support needed for those diagnosed with the illness.

Adam Singleton writes on a number of topics on behalf of a digital marketing agency and a variety of clients. As such, this article is to be considered a professional piece with business interests in mind.

Route 66 first entered the general public conscience in 1939 when California writer John Steinbeck published his novel “The Grapes of Wrath”, detailing the westward migration of Oklahoma’s Dust Bowl farmers to California’s San Joaquin Valley. During the story, he refers to Route 66 as the “Mother Road”, a nickname it still has today. When Steinbeck won the Pulitzer Prize for his novel, the road became even more famous.

The highway also gave its name to a popular television show, “Route 66”, broadcast during the early sixties in the United States. The show featured two young men looking for adventure along America’s highways and was clearly inspired by passages from “On the Road” by Jack Kerouac, his book describing several cross country adventures undertaken in the 1940s. The book has since become a literary staple for any would-be road trippers and has inspired countless journeys down Route 66.

Starting in the 1950s and continuing gradually over the next 25 years, old Route 66 was bypassed section by section as the high-speed Interstate highways were completed. Finally, in 1984, when the last stretch of freeway was finished, Route 66 was officially decommissioned; the old route is now designated Historic Route 66 and is firmly lodged, with an almost mythical quality, in modern popular culture. Even here some authors read books and playing online sudoku while writing or singing

While much of the appeal of taking a trip down the legendary highway lies in the thought of being on the open road in the wilderness, speeding past one great attraction to the next, Route 66 also takes in some of the United States’ most archetypal roadside scenes including great displays of neon signs, rusty middle-of-nowhere truck stops and kitschy Americana. These almost accidental tourist attractions detail a rich part of America’s history, with many of the roadside cafes and motels being opened during the Great Depression when hundreds of thousands of farm families, displaced from the Dust Bowl, made their way west along Route 66 to California. Indeed, many of the small roadside towns along the route only survive today due to shameless self promotion of attractions and nostalgic travellers, eager to enjoy a small part of this increasingly endangered American experience.

Over the past 50 years, more and more people have set their sights on a trip down Route 66 and with constant developments in the world of automobile travel, particularly in the realm of car finance, the experience is no longer exclusive to people with time on their hands and money to burn.

From the suburban idyll of Southern California, past the Grand Canyon and the Native American communities of the desert southwest, to the gritty streets of St. Louis and Chicago, a trip down Route 66 is truly the pinnacle of road tripping for any traveller and offers an unforgettable journey down the Main Street of America.

Maxim Magazine aimed squarely at young men, is a glossy magazine focused on beautiful women, slick gadgets, fast cars, sports, entertainment and other male obsessions. Maxim is written for young professional men who are confident, intelligent everyday guys. Maxim is a unique combination of service journalism, sudoku games and irreverent humor addressing real concerns of regular guys. Its success comes from understanding that men need to know a little bit about a lot of things and MAXIM delivers this information in a witty & relevant style. Maxim addresses the real life needs of intelligent professional men in an entertaining as well as informative way.

This publication sets out to reach men in their late 20’s rather than out and out lads producing a magazine that readers can grow into rather than out of. Research confirms that the mean average age for this magazine is on target at 28. It serves as both a fun and informative publication delivering a healthy balance of accessible service with a humorous tone. In addition to scantily clad cover models and plenty of revealing photo layouts, issues include reviews of the latest movies in theaters, CD, DVD along with video games and articles on how to successfully seduce women the latest styles and trends and interviews with celebrities. Maxim is the essential guide for active male consumer. Every issue features fashion, sports, gadgets, sports gear, sex advice, music & movie reviews all in an entertaining and irreverent style where humor is a key element. Other regular features include jokes, trivia, a sex column, practical advice, a sports column and more.

Maxim published by Alpha Media Group is the essential guide for active male consumer. With one of the largest male subscriber files Maxim addresses the real life needs of men in an entertaining and engaging style. I also have to admit that it is a pretty interesting magazine to read. It seldom has any long in-depth articles like Playboy, so you can pick it up anywhere and not get too absorbed. Here are some titles just to give you some examples of some of their articles. How to Fight a Duel, complete with history as well as the best ways to incite a challenge out of someone in the modern age, how to sneak into any sporting event, how to spot a ‘fake’ woman in a bar to avoid recreating an embarrassing scene from the “Crying Game”. Another article is How to sound smart about money which gives detailed terms to throw out about stocks, bonds and interest rates to impress the unenlightened.

Like many women magazines some articles are clearly only aimed at one sex. Both how to spot a nymphomaniac and how to score at a funeral are clearly only aimed at men but how to screw with a telemarketer can be considered good advice for either men or women. One article lists the top five countries that have more women than men and possible reasons why. It could be argued that this is not a gender specific article but after reading it it becomes clear that this is telling men where to travel if you want to improve your odds of finding a woman.

Every issue of Maxim includes reviews of the latest movies, music, video games, the latest styles and trends plus interviews with celebrities. Other regular features include the best of sports, gadgets, health and fitness, fashion, sex and humor. Maxim Magazine is similar to Playboy, Penthouse and most other Magazines. I might call this a somewhat more juvenile version of Playboy, but that is not quite the most accurate description.

Subscriber Profile:
· 73%- Age 18-34
· 27- Median age
· $64,428- Median household income
· 61%- Single
· 66%- College graduate
· 39%- Homeowner

It should be noted that the magazine has achieved an amazing level of success in a very short time. It came out in early 1997, and by the end of 1999 it had become the number one general interest magazine for men. They boast that on the newsstand, Maxim outsells Esquire, Rolling Stone, and Sports Illustrated magazines combined. Alpha Media Group, (formerly Dennis Publishing), publishes the two most successful modern lifestyle magazines for men in America - Maxim and Stuff - along with general interest music magazine Blender.

London has produced some of the most successful authors and provided the backdrop for countless novels, so if you want to explore the capital’s literary history, perhaps your first stop should be the historic pub “I Am the Only Running Footman” - on Charles Street in Mayfair. This 1749 drinking den, was once the hangout of servants and is said to have inspired P.G. Woodhouse to create the fictional club “Junior Ganymede” for “the gentlemen’s gentlemen”.

No visit to London is complete without paying homage to perhaps the most famous of all English authors, Charles Dickens, which can conveniently be done at the Dickens House Museum at 48 Doughy Street. Here you can tour the rooms where Dickens lived with his family during a particularly productive period of writing, when the author completed “Oliver Twist”. The museum also holds the world’s most important collection of material relating of Dickens, where visitors can see paintings, rare editions, manuscripts, original furniture and many other items that relate to the life of the most popular and beloved personality of the Victorian age.

If all that leaves you a little thirsty, why not indulge in a pint of London’s finest ale in Dickens’ local watering hole - “The Lamb on Lamb”. This pub was not just a hangout for Dickens, but also the meeting place of the “Bloomsbury Group”, a collection of novelists and essayists whose work deeply influenced the literature of the period, and whose topics often focused on controversial areas of the time, including feminism and sexuality.

For crime fiction fans, 221b Baker Street is an essential stop on the London Literary tour. As the home of London’s most famous detective Sherlock Holmes and his sidekick Doctor Watson, this notorious address is the starting point for dozens of the detective duo’s adventures.

To witness part of a more recent literary phenomenon, JK Rowling fans can pay a visit to Kings Cross station. From here, muggles can attempt to find Harry Potter and Co’s platform 9 and three quarters, from where they catch the Hogwarts Express to their wizarding school.

Bookworms who are looking to buy a piece of prose can peruse some of the thousands of new and second-hand book shops; from the big chains like Waterstones, Blackwell or Borders, which sit next to some of the most prestigious shops and hotels in London, right down to the smaller, side-street stores, where books from times gone by are piled up and waiting to be rediscovered again.

The world is home to many famous authors, but nowhere else is there such a concentration of literary heroes as you’ll find in London; so if you truly are a book lover, the British capital should definitely be on your visiting list.

The site of the former Pacific Ocean Park in the beach district on the Venice and Santa Monica border is something of a sacred legend within the skateboarding and surfing community. The area, which is nicknamed Dogtown, was immortalised in the 2001 skateboarding documentary, Dogtown and Z-Boys, and later in the 2005 feature film, Lords of Dogtown, which was based on the characters and events introduced in Dogtown and Z-Boys.

Dogtown and Z-Boys, directed by Stacy Peralta (himself a member of the original Z-Boys) and narrated by Hollywood star Sean Penn, tells the history of skateboarding. The documentary charts the story of a group of teenage surfer/skateboarders in Santa Monica, known as the Z-Boys, and their influence on the history of skateboarding (and to a lesser extent surfing) culture, using a mix of film of the Z-Boys shot in the 1970s and more recently conducted interviews.

The aerial and sliding skate moves that the Z-Boys invented were the basis for the aerial skateboarding and surfing still popular today. These were just twelve ordinary teenagers who hung out in the Santa Monica neighbourhood of Dogtown who just wanted to surf and skate. They could never have known that they would start a revolution by turning what was a recreational past-time into an extreme sport.

Considered the most influential skateboard team in history, the Z-Boy movement continues to this day as an expression of performance, innovation and style.

Known officially as the Zephyr Skateboard Team, the Z-Boys began when they transferred their surf skills to drain pipes and empty swimming pools with stunning results. Their acrobatic maneuvers inspired generations of teens to join the skateboarding frenzy and catapulted them to fame and fortune; the majority of the original Z-Boys went on to compete professionally. Bob “Bullet” Biniak retired from skating in 1980, but went on to play golf professionally, while the only female member of the Z-Boys, Peggy Oki, rejected skating in favour of surfing, and has competed in surf contests all over the world. Jim Muir and Tony Alva both rejected deals from major skate companies to set up on their own, and were the first skateboarders to ever do so.

In 2005, Stacy Peralta wrote the screenplay for Lords of Dogtown, which dramatically retold the Dogtown days. Starring Heath Ledger and Rebecca De Mornay, and featuring a cameo from perhaps the world’s most famous modern day skateboarder Tony Hawk, Lords of Dogtown focused more on the relationships between the Z-Boys, looking at their friendships, how they coped with fame, and how they grew more and more competitive towards one another. It also focused heavily on the tragic loss of Z-Boy associate Sid, who lost a battle against brain cancer.

Skateboarders or surfers keen to make a pilgrimage to the legendary and iconic Dogtown for themsleves can find a hotel in Santa Monica for their accomodation needs, and thankfully, the area has improved a lot since the Dogtown days.

The story of the Dogtown and Z-Boys is an inspiring tale of determination, rebellion, and friendship, and even those who have no interest in skateboarding or surfing, and been won over by this fascinating little piece of American sub-culture.
